UPDATE: 2 people killed in wrong-way crash on I-565 in Huntsville, 5 others hurt

Two people were killed and five others were transported to the hospital after an overnight wreck.

Police have not identified the two people killed in the crash, pending notification of family.

Huntsville Police say the road has reopened between Westbound Highway 72 at the Sparkman exit and Eastbound I-565 at the Oakwood exit.

The three-vehicle wreck happened just after 2:30 a.m., Saturday at the eastbound interchange between I-565 and Highway 72.

Huntsville Police Traffic Homicide Investigators say they believe a wrong-way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes on I-565 caused the crash.

The wrong-way driver first hit a vehicle killing the passenger inside.

After hitting the first vehicle the driver hit a another vehicle, killing the driver inside.

Charges are expected, awaiting toxicology results.

There is no update to provide on the five people taken to the hospital, according to Huntsville Police.

The crash is still under investigation at this time.
