A man working at a construction site in Florence died Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a bulldozer, according to Florence Police.

Officials identifed the man as 55-year-old David Thornton. Police said he was from Carthage, Mississippi.

Police said Thornton was hit just before noon Wednesday on the site of new apartments being built on West Irvine Street in west Florence. The man was taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.

Memphis-based Montgomery Martin Contractors is the contractor for the apartments, which are being developed by Mallory and Evans Development in Scottsdale, Ga.

Police said OSHA has been contacted to investigate the incident.
