UPDATE (8:16 a.m.):

The second piece of the Confederate monument was lifted into place at Maple Hill Cemetery. Next, the soldier will be placed on top.

UPDATE (6:40 a.m.):

The City of Huntsville provided the follwing statement about the removal of the monument:

The City of Huntsville, at the request of the Madison County Commission, is in the process of relocating the monument of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan from the Madison County Courthouse to a site near the Confederate burial section at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Madison County Commissioners have been working since June to find a lawful way to move the statue. Mayor Tommy Battle and the Huntsville City Council offered the City's assistance to secure a suitable location and presented a historic area in the cemetery as an alternative where many Civil War soldiers are buried.

Commission Chair Dale Strong recently informed the City he believed the County had found a legal path forward to move the statue.

The City of Huntsville prepared a site for the monument and retained a contractor and crane operator to assist with the move.

"We started mobilizing overnight to make as much progress as possible before businesses opened in the morning and traffic resumed," said City Administrator John Hamilton. "We hope to complete the move in one day, but our primary focus is on safely and securely moving the monument.”

UPDATE (6:20 a.m.):

The last of the barriers were removed from downtown Huntsville. Huntsville Police said they are working to have the statue in place by around noon on Friday, October 23.

Crews removed the statue in five chunks over the course of several hours.

Huntsville city officials said they assisted at the request of the Madison County Commission. More information about the move is expected to be released later in the morning.

The staute is now being placed at Maple Hill Cemetery where a spot was already cleared off.

UPDATE:

The statue of the soldier was lifted from the Confederate monument. It took place at 1:17 a.m. Friday.

From earlier:

The Confederate monument outside the Madison County Courthouse in downtown Huntsville is being removed.

Law enforcement and work crews began blocking off the area around the monument about 11 p.m. Thursday.

Huntsville police said it could take between three and 12 hours to remove the monument as crews are trying to determine how it is anchored to the ground.

Earlier this week, Madison County Commissioner Roger Jones told WAAY 31 he believed the monument would be moved soon. He said he believes it will be relocated to Maple Hill Cemetery. The cemetery is managed by the city and where the monument currently sits is county property.
