TREMONT, Miss. (WTVA) - A woman reportedly kidnapped after a long police chase on Sunday has come forward stating she was not taken.

Angelica Harris, 24, is a deaf mother of three.

Franklin County authorities say her ex-boyfriend, 29-year-old Curtis Bakley, was driving at the time.

Sheriff Shannon Oliver confrims they tried to pull Bakley over for speeding, but he didn’t stop, at least not in Alabama. He did not stop until he got to Itawamba County.

Harris held up a note saying she was being held against her will.

However, on Facebook, the mother upholds it wasn’t a kidnapping at all. She tells WTVA she “tried to make him pull over but he wouldn’t listen.”

The reason: Bakley was scared of going back to jail.

According to authorities, he faces numerous traffic violations including reckless endangerment.

Sheriff Oliver says Bakley gestured his hand like a gun to Harris’ head during the pursuit.

Harris explains some sign language words can look like guns.

According to AL.com Harris got a protection order against her then boyfriend in November.

Sheriff Oliver says it’s up to a grand jury to give Bakley any lesser charge.

Bakley’s bond is set at $250,000.

ORIGINAL STORY

TREMONT, Miss. (WTVA) - In Tremont, Mississippi, east of Fulton, authorities were able to put an end to a case that could have ended up much worse.

Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver confirms that 29-year-old Curtis Bakley, from Cullman, kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, 24-year-old Angelica Harris, near Decatur, Alabama. Later, around 1 pm Sunday afternoon, as they sped westward on Highway 24, they were clocked by troopers at high speed around 8 miles east of Russellville. During an attempted traffic stop, Harris held up a note on her side of the car that she was being held against her will. At the same time, Sheriff Oliver says, Bakley gestured with his hand and finger pointed at Harris's head that he had a gun. Bakley then rammed a patrol car and sped away. This accelerated the pursuit.

A short while later, Bakley crossed over into Mississippi, and not far from Tremont, authorities set up a roadblock to catch Bakley. At that point, according to Sheriff Oliver, with the help of the Itawamba County Sheriff's office, authorities were able to talk Bakley into giving himself up, and the pursuit ended.

So what could have ended in tragedy, ended peacefully. Bakley was booked in Franklin County, charged with assault, assault on a police officer, and kidnapping.

As of Tuesday, December 5, Bakley's bond was set at $250,000.
