President Trump views Tennessee tornado damage, offers hope

President Trump travelled to Tennessee Friday to assess the extensive damage from this week's deadly tornadoes.

“We are going to be with you,” Trump said.

Twenty-four people died in Tuesday morning’s tornadoes in Tennessee.

Eighteen of them were killed in the Cookeville community.

Residents lined the streets Friday hoping to catch a glimpse of the president’s motorcade, but officials instead had Trump survey that damage from the air.

Still, residents said Trump’s visit meant a lot to them.

“It just brings tears to your eyes him coming in here and seeing all the damage here in Cookeville,” said Heather Palk.

"You almost feel guilty for asking for any help because I feel like my house is still standing but I didn't realize and think about deductibles and stuff like that extra stuff out of our pocket that we don't have.”

Trump met with some families who lost loved ones, offering comfort and pledging the support of the federal government.

The president also saw damage from the Germantown area.

The magnitude of the devastating tornadoes is starting to set in for some people.

"The leader of our nation is here. It really does just put it in perspective how big this disaster has been," said David Trett.

Vietnam veteran Greg Bilbrey said he knows it could’ve been worse, even though he’s now homeless.

“You appreciate what we got until it’s taken away from you,” he said.

Bilbrey said he won’t rebuild in his Ashcroft neighborhood in Cookeville, where he lost his home and four friends and neighbors died.
