UPDATE: Huntsville Hospital CEO David Spillers said there are 218 people with coronavirus hospitalized in North Alabama. He said 118 of these are in Madison County, with 31 in the ICU and 14 on ventilators.

In total in North Alabama, there are 50 patients with coronavirus in ICUs and 23 on ventilators.

Spillers said the youngest inpatient is 20 and the oldest is 92. He said the average age of hospitalized patients is in the 60s.

He said there’s been a spike of inpatients in hospitals across the region and also noted a substantial increase in Limestone County.

Spillers said he thinks we’ll continue to see more inpatients based on the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The John Hunt testing site maxed out last Monday and Tuesday at 400 tests. There are new testing locations this week in Madison County. You can find the locations here.

Right now, Spillers said about 15% of people being tested for coronavirus in Madison County are getting a positive result. He said it’s still taking up to 7 days to get results.

Spillers also said there were members from the CDC in the county last week. He said he stressed to them the need for more in-house testing capacity at the hospital.

Spillers and Madison Mayor Paul Finley said they are hopeful mandatory masking will make a positive difference.

Finley said daily increases of cases are down. He said for the most part, people are following the mandatory masking order in Madison County.
