For the second time in three years, the North Alabama Lions are hosting the Gulf South Conference Softball Tournament.  The last time they brought the tourney to Florence the ladies not only won the conference title, they also won the Division II National Championship.

That's a feat they'll hope to repeat as they take the first step in doing so on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m., facing the No. 8 seed, Lee.  The Lions swept the Flames in their three meetings this season, winning by an average margin of eight runs.

Last year's tournament host, the University of Alabama in Huntsville Chargers earned the No. 3 seed this year and will get the tournament rolling at 10 a.m. against No. 6 West Florida, who they took two out of three games from in their three game regular season series.

The conference also released their annual all-conference awards on Wedneday.  Valdosta State's Jessica Mohl won the award for GSC Player of the Year after finishing the regular season with a .456 batting average, 57 runs scored, eight home runs and 43 RBIs.  North Alabama's Megan Garst was named the GSC Pitcher of the Year thanks to a league leading 1.27 ERA and conference best marks in strikeouts and wins. UAH's Kiara Akles and West Goergia's Alley Taylor shared the honor of Freshman of the Year.  Akles hit .313 during the regular season with 11 home runs and 42 RBIs while Taylor tallied a .401 batting average and a .612 slugging percentage. After leading the Lady Lions to a 42-4 overall record, Ashley Cozart was named the GSC Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons.
