Suspect identified in deadly shooting involving Tuscumbia police officers

UPDATE: Tuscumbia police confirm the suspect in the shooting is dead. He has been identified as Kenneth Sashington, 38. His body has been taken to Huntsville for an autopsy.

The department received a call about 3:55 a.m. Tuesday about a suspicious person banging on doors at Trenholm Heights Apartments. Officers arrived around 4 a.m.

Police say a suspect in the apartment complex shot at officers. They say there was an exchange of gunfire, and the suspect ran north from the apartments.

According to police, the suspect shot again at officers in the area of South Mulberry Street and 10th Street. The department confirms that suspect is dead.

The State Bureau of Investigation is taking over the case.

State police are investigating the incident, and there is still a law enforcement presence at the scene.
