Police have charged a woman with aggravated cruelty to animals after they said she left her dog in a hot car for seven hours.
Stephanie Shae Thomas, 34, of Trussville, was arrested late Thursday night, according to Birmingham ABC affiliate ABC 33/40.
Trussville police said the dog was left in a car at the Trussville Walmart at 4 a.m. Police said Thomas told them she lost track of time while shopping and never went outside to check on the dog. Temperatures outside were around 90 degrees when the dog was found, ABC 33/40 reported.
Police broke open the car's window and tried to rescue the dog, but it died on the scene.
Thomas was jailed on a $25,000 bond.
