Madison County School officials held its first Merge Day event at Sparkman Middle School Tuesday, as some elementary school students get ready to graduate to middle school.

Fifth graders from Madison Cross Roads Elementary School and Harvest Elementary School came together for a day of activities. Students from the two elementary schools will be feeding into Sparkman Middle School in the upcoming school year.

The event is an effort to get students from different elementary schools to merge into one before the next school year.

"Transition is always an issue, and middle school's kind of a scary place," said Russ O'Rear, Sparkman Middle School principal. "We wanted to do something to allow kids to come in and just have a fun day, kind of ease some fears and get to know some people."

Tuesday's event included small group activities and talks with middle school students. Fifth graders also left painted handprints on the wall inside Sparkman Middle School, and ended the day with a color run.
