An entire marina roof collapsed Friday in Colbert County due to the weight of the snow.
At least 12 boats are under the collapsed roof at Steenson Hollow Marina by the Tennessee River in Muscle Shoals.
The owner told WAAY 31 News that no one was on their boat when the roof collapsed around 12:30 p.m. He said he was standing nearby when he started hearing some popping and then the whole thing came down in one fell swoop.
Several of the owners whose boats are now trapped by the snow-laden roof came to survey the damage. Barry Searcy said he's only owned his boat for about a week and was in the process of getting it insured when the roof collapsed.
"I'm right in the middle of two boats and can't really tell what the damage is yet. I'm worried. Now they've cut the power off, so I'm worried about it freezing the engines," Searcy said.
The roof of another dock nearby also started to sag under the weight of the snow. For now though, some of the boats underneath it are supporting its weight.
Now all of the owners are waiting for the crane work to start on Saturday to see how quickly the roofs can be removed and the damage beneath undone.
"They've got a crane in place, so maybe things will go smooth and it won't be as bad as it could be, you know? Maybe it will go smooth and everyone will be back to normal soon," said fellow boat owner Brian Roberts.
