We've been telling you about heavy rain heading toward the Tennessee Valley for Wednesday. That forecast is still on track. The spotty showers and thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday were just a start of the increasing moisture. The biggest rain is on the way.
Spotty showers and a few heavy thunderstorms will track through the Tennessee Valley on our Tuesday evening. Most of us in the Valley will stay dry, but those of us who get rain can get heavy bursts of rain. Slippery roads and limited visibility will make for a slow evening drive in spots. The chance for rain comes to an end by 6-7 PM.
Our next weather maker was dumping heavy rain over parts of Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. That storm system will move into the Tennessee Valley on Wednesday, bringing rain in waves. It can start as early as 10 AM to noon, with spotty showers possibly preceding the main wave of rain. The intial wave of rain will move through with some isolated 40-50 mph wind gusts. The Shoals gets the start of the storms between 10 AM and noon. The leading line of heavy rain and gusty winds will cross I-65 and track into Huntsville and Madison around 11 AM to 1 PM, then into Sand Mountain between noon and 2 PM.
A break in the rain will work west to east from noon to 3 PM. That could mean dry period for the evening drive, though some rain spots are still possible. Another wave of rain will track from west to east across the Valley from around 8 PM through midnight.
Rainfall amounts will average a half-inch to an inch with locally higher amounts possibly up to as high as two inches. A stray stronger storm can produce 40-50 mph wind gusts, but the environment does not strongly favor severe thunderstorms. Localized street flooding is possible. Slippery roads and limited visibility can mean difficult driving conditions at times.
