Lincoln County Superintendent Dr. Bill Heath said two individuals who have been diagnosed with coronavirus were at South Lincoln School while potentially infectious.

The school, located in Fayetteville, Tenn., includes students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Students returned to classrooms this week.

Superintendent Dr. Bill Heath confirmed that a middle school student and a staff member tested positive for coronavirus. Superintendent Dr. Bill Heath confirmed that a middle school student and a staff member tested positive for coronavirus.

Heath said one of the positive cases is a middle school student, and the other is a staff member.

Heath said the school system and health department began an investigation into who may have come in close contact with the individuals, and all who have been within six feet of the individuals for more than 10 minutes in the last 48 hours have been notified.

They’ve been instructed to quarantine for 14 days since last contact with the individuals, Heath said.

According to the Lincoln County Schools coronavirus plan, if the total number of active coroanvirus cases across the general population of Lincoln County exceeds 174, or 0.5 percent of the population, then the district will transition to its hybrid plan of in-person and remote learning.

As of Friday night, the Tennessee Department of Health reported 121 active cases. There are 276 cumulative cases since the state started tracking coronavirus data and one person has died.

Heath added that if Lincoln County were to exceed 340 active cases then the district would move to a full virtual option.

This dynamic is one that Coffee County, Tennessee, had to deal with this week. On Tuesday, Coffee County Schools announced it was closing Coffee County Middle Schools and North Coffee Elementary School because they "did not want to bring students into an area in which we could not guarantee minimum risk of exposure to COVID-19."

On Friday, the system announced that the full district is moving to its hybrid schedule because the county's active case rate was above 0.5 percent.

"The case rate will have to remain below 0.5 percent for at least two consecutive weeks for the district to move back to the traditional schedule," Coffee County Schools said in a statement on Friday.

Meanwhile, back in Lincoln County, Heath said South Lincoln School is scheduled to be back in class on Monday, but said they will monitor the situation of the weekend.
