Athens Police said one person died in a three-vehicle wreck on Sunday evening. That person has been identified by the Limestone County Coroner's Office as 29-year-old Mary Elizabeth Savage.

Three other people were injured in the wreck. Two were taken to Athens-Limestone Hospital. The third injured driver was taken to Huntsville Hospital.

Athens Police said one person died in the wreck on Highway 31. Athens Police said one person died in the wreck on Highway 31.

Officials said the collision happened on Highway 31 at Moyers Road.

A vehicle fire also occurred as a result of the wreck.

An Athens woman is now being called a hero after she was one of the first to respond to the fatal wreck near her home.

WAAY 31 talked with the woman who helped, and learned why she did what she did.

“I was just sitting in the living room, watching TV, and I heard what I thought was a gunshot," Tammy Gatlin said.

Gatlin said her peaceful Easter holiday took a turn when she heard people screaming not far from her home.

“I heard a man yell, ‘I can’t help him.’”

That’s when Gatlin ran outside and saw flames.

She quickly called 9-1-1, jumped in her car, and headed over to the crash.

“I did not know what to expect, but I wanted to help out in any way that I could," Gatlin said. "If me and my kids were in that situation, I would pray that somebody would help as much as they could.”

When she pulled up, Gatlin says she saw a young girl.

“She was just in shock. She was screaming and crying. Her mother seemed to be hurt. She has blood on her legs and she couldn’t get out of the vehicle. She couldn’t stand," Gatlin said. "We basically stayed there and helped comfort the little girl and helped comfort the mother until the police got there.”

According to first responders, the little girl's mother was one of three people hurt in the accident. Another woman was killed.

“I pray that whoever that was was right with God, and they’re now in eternity with Jesus," Gatlin said. "Just know that, if that’s the case, they’re in great hands.”

The conditions of those who were injured are unknown at this time. Athens police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
