You can now explore Alabama's historic sites at your fingertips with a new mobile app. ALABAMA 200 announced the official release of the Alabama Bicentennial PastPort mobile app Friday.

Users can virtually visit nearly 300 museums, landmarks and historic destinations throughout Alabama's 67 counties, as well as digitally stamp their PastPort. Officials said the app supports the Alabama Bicentennial PastPort printed guide, and the technology links to Encyclopedia of Alabama, where users can learn more about destinations.

The app is designed to share Alabama's story through exploration, both virtual and actual.

"The PastPort will appeal to all ages, but we especially wanted it to engage fourth graders because that's when they are first introduced to Alabama history," said Jay Lamar, Executive Director of the Alabama Bicentennial Commission. "It, along with lesson plans, can be downloaded into any Alabama classroom. But it is a great way to encourage people of all ages to get out and see Alabama."

Here's a list of the PastPort sites throughout the Tennessee Valley. The asterisk designates a retail location carrying the PastPort book.
