NFL fans speak their opinion on new national anthem rule

Despite the politics, many are still planing to watch the NFL.

People in Alabama are speaking out about the NFL's new rule about what they expect of players during the National Anthem.

Now players have the option to stay in the locker room instead of standing during the pre-game anthem.

This new rule comes after football player Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the National Anthem in 2016.
He said his silent protest was against racial injustice and police brutality in America. Other athletes followed that lead.

"I think they have a right to come out against that, but it's a time and a place for that. I don't think sports should be used as a platform," said Jerry Burt.

"Sports as a platform is not a problem. It's always been used for that. During integration, during certain Olympics and the Nazis not being part of the Olympics and so on," said Kenley Obas.

Kneeling during the National Anthem is disrespectful to Jerry Burt who respects the american flag and what it stands for.

"I think when it comes to veterans and what the flag represents, shame on anyone who will not represent that way," Burt said.

But others such as Kenley Obas believe athletes 'taking a knee' has nothing to do with the flag.

"We're talking about patriotism and that has nothing to do with being patriotic. It's simply because police brutality had an issue and they wanted to make it know," Obas said.

WAAY 31 spoke with Vern Spearman who's a veteran. He said at first he was offended when players didn't participate in the national anthem. But after doing some research, he respected the movement.

"They're kneeling to give honor to fallen civil rights leaders who died in the fight of freedom. They were also kneeling for injustice and police brutality," Vern Spearman said.

He said it reminds him of when veterans kneel and place flags at a fallen soldiers graves, to pay homage. No matter what, Spearman said he's seen worse. Such as people in the audience distracted during the national anthem.

"You see people take the flag and make it a cap or a blanket. Is that disrespectful to flags? We need to ask ourselves that," Spearman said.

Some people also said they understand the NFL's new rule from a financial stand point. Despite the politics, many are still planing to watch the NFL.

The opening NFL pre-season game and the first time the anthem will be played this season starting August 12th.
