A Lexington High School student has been killed in a wreck, according to officials.

The 16-year-old male was driving a 2001 Ford F-150 when the vehicle left the road and struck a tree, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. He was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene.

A fatal wreck took place on County Road 71

Lauderdale County Schools released a statement Tuesday evening in which Superintendent Jerry Hill and the Lauderdale County Board of Education extended their deepest sympathies to the Lexington School family and community. They called for the public to "honor the privacy of the students' family and remember at this time."

"We are committed to serving the needs of the students and employees of Lexington in the days and weeks to come," the statement reads. "Additional counselors and support staff will be on campus at Lexington (Wednesday) to work with students and employees. Today we are all Bear Strong!"

The crash happened about 3:10 p.m. on Lauderdale County 71, about 3 miles south of Lexington. The wreck remains under investigation.
