People in Lawrence County are starting to cleanup after the tornado hit portions of the county, leaving behind damage.

The National Weather Service confirms one tornado hit Hatton at the intersection of Highway 157 and 140.

"I cried before I got here because I just thought about it. All the trees we planted here. 38 years here," said Joann Watson, whose home was hit by the tornado.

For Joann Watson the trees that fell once brought joy and memories to her home for over a decade.

Now, they're just in a pile of debris they have to clean up after the Saturday tornado hit.

"Our shade. Our kids played under them. Our grandkids played under them. All of the kids that we keep," said Joann Watson.

While she may have lost a symbol for some memories, she's glad the trees didn't hit her house causing more damage, especially since her husband was home alone.

"When he got to the top of the steps. His ears and head filled up with a lot of pressure. He heard boom boom boom boom. And that was it. 10 seconds and it was over," Watson said.

Ten seconds was all it took for a storm to bring down something full of so many memories in the family's life.

"A big tree in the back fell and just came up against the house and stopped. Didn't do anything else," Watson said.

Watson and her neighbors who live on Highway 157 and 140 are cleaning their yards, calling insurance companies and waiting for contractors to come out.

"I have no clue. No clue on how long it's going to take to clear everything out," Watson said.

But despite the mess, neighbors said they feel blessed.

"God was watching after us. It could've been worse. Not only trees down, but the house could have been down. All down this road nobody was hurt," Watson said.

People in Colbert County are also cleaning what's left of their home from Saturday night's tornado.

The emergency management team tells WAAY 31 winds were going 95 mph on Cook Road in Littleville.

One couple was outside minutes before the tornado hit Saturday night.

They tell me they heard thunder and saw lightning in the sky, then they heard a loud roaring noise that sounded like a train.

They then went inside their house and laid on the floor until the tornado left.

The couple said the tornado lasted for about a minute. They were in shock when it ended and it will take them about six weeks for the damage to their home to be repaired.
