UPDATE: (5/10/19 at 1:48 p.m.) On Friday, Huntsville police released more information about Thursday's shooting in the Publix parking lot on Old Monrovia Road.
Police say a mother and son were parked in the parking lot at the Publix around 5:50 p.m. on Thursday, when they were approached by two suspects, 19-year-old Deangelo Lindsay and 22-year-old Precious Howard. The mother was sitting in her car with her son standing at the passenger side by his car, according to police.
While the mother and son were talking, police say the suspects parked behind them and approached them with visible handguns. Police say Howard went to the mother's driver's side of her vehicle and pointed a gun at her, and Lindsay went up to the son and pointed a gun at him.
Police say the suspects demanded money and personal items from the victims. When Lindsay began to turn his gun towards the mother, police say the son then pulled out his conceal carry gun and shot Lindsay.
According to police, Lindsay fell to the ground as Howard ran away. The son picked up Lindsay’s gun and threw it in his vehicle, and Lindsay then got back up and got into his vehicle with Howard, police say.
Police say the suspects then drove towards the AMC theatre on Old Monrovia Road, where they wrecked their vehicle. Officers responded to the theater and arrested both Lindsay and Howard.
Lindsay was transported from the scene for medical treatment, and he's currently in a hospital being guarded. Police say the vehicle the suspects were in had been stolen out of Mountain Brook, Alabama during a car jacking.
Howard was arrested on two counts of robbery 1st degree. It's unknown at this time what charges Lindsay is facing. Both suspects are from the Birmingham area.
Huntsville police say the department is working with law enforcement in Mountain Brook on the investigation, as it is possible there are more crimes linked to these suspects. Police say the shooting was out of defense and happened at a close range.
Huntsville police say a suspect is in custody after a person was shot Thursday evening in the parking lot of the Publix off Old Monrovia Road.
There is currently a police presence at two locations on Old Monrovia Road, the Publix and the AMC movie theater. Police said an incident in the parking lot of the Publix led to the shooting, and some people involved left the lot, which is why there is a second scene.
WAAY 31 talked to a movie theater employee who described to us what he saw when he was at work Thursday evening.
"I see a car that was wrecked, the front end. I saw some cars pull into our parking lot. About five minutes later, about 12 cop cars just come flying up along with a fire truck and ambulance," Romey Suryono said.
