Huntsville Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff's Office are each competing to win a $5,000 grant to help improve their K-9 units.

HPD has the biggest K-9 unit in North Alabama, and the grant could provide an opportunity to help improve the department in a big way.

"It’ll go towards training equipment, things like that," said HPD Sgt. Kevin Matthews. "... We are always looking for training opportunities. Training opportunities tend to cost money."

A total of $25,000 in grants is being offered by Aftermath, a company that specializes in crime scene cleanups. The funds can be used for maintaining an existing K-9 unit, adding to a unit or creating a new one.

You can visit their website to vote here. Voters are limited to one vote per day per device through the website, and one vote per account on Aftermath's Facebook and Instagram. Voting is open through Tuesday, with winners announced Thursday.

Matthews encouraged everyone to participate.
