One person dead in Huntsville officer involved shooting

A spokesperson for the department says the shooting happened on Edinburgh Drive around 10:30 Friday night.

Update: 

The Madison County District Attorney is now investigating a shooting incident involving a Huntsville police officer.

Lieutenant Jesse Sumlin with the Huntsville Police Department says at around 10:30 Friday night police responded to a 911 hang up call on the 2100 block of Edinburgh Drive in South Huntsville. Sumlin said there, they found 57-year-old Alberto Rivas who had a handgun pointed at police. He said one officer fired, striking Rivas. Rivas was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Sumlin says the officer involved will remain in an administrative role until the investigation is complete.

Huntsville Police is investigating an officer involved shooting that happened in South Huntsville.

A spokesperson for the department said the shooting happened on Edinburgh Drive around 10:30 Friday night. The spokesperson said one person was taken to Huntsville Hospital. He also said all the officers involved were not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
