UPDATE:

The Huntsville Police Department says it has charged Archie Lee Hamlet III, 40, with second-degree assault after a shooting on Monday.

Police said the shooting began with a traffic stop. During the stop, Hamlet got out of his vehicle and a physical confrontation occurred between the officer and the driver, according to police.

Police have not released the identity of the officer.

During the struggle the officer was tased, forcing the officer to discharge his firearm and striking the offender, police said. The offender was transported to Huntsville Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he was treated and released.

The officer received minor injuries during the incident and was treated on the scene, police said.
Per department policy, a shooting review board will be convened within the next two weeks and the officer will he placed on paid administrative duty until the conclusion of the review process, police said.

From earlier:

Huntsville police said a traffic stop around 4:27 p.m. Monday led to a shooting at 199 Wilkenson Drive, which is close to Meridian Street. According to police, the driver assaulted the officer and the officer opened fire.

A neighbor who lives close to where the person was shot described what they saw, "I heard the guy sayin', 'Help me, help me, I didn't do anything.' He said that about five times, and then I heard the gunshot," said Robbie Cartwright.

Around 8 p.m. Monday, a tow truck came and took away a red car in the driveway of where the shooting happened on Wilkenson Drive. WAAY 31 emailed police to find out why that happened and how the car is related to what happened, but we haven't gotten a response.

Cartwright told WAAY 31 she was in her house on Monday when she heard some screaming from outside, so she went to check it out, "I saw the police going up in the yard with his gun drawn," said Cartwright. "I heard the gunshot."

Cartwright didn't see exactly what happened from where she was standing, but she saw what happened next, "I saw them bring him out, and the ambulance drove away with him."

Cartwright is used to seeing police in the neighborhood, "The police are out here all the time, because it's something going on all the time, but typically, we feel safe, but it's always something going on," said Cartwright, but this time was different, "That's the first time I've experienced something like that."

The driver was taken to the hospital and is alive, police say.

An investigation is ongoing. Huntsville Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene.
