Gas prices across the Tennessee Valley keep going up. With summer right around the corner, drivers can expect to pay more at the pump. Many understand it's because of higher crude oil prices.
Crude oil accounts for 72% of the price of gasoline. When oil prices go up, gas prices are sure to follow about 6 weeks later.
"Gas prices are at least a 1.50 more. Some places close to LA are a lot more than that," said Cody Buchanan
Cody Buchanan moved down South from California. He said the gas prices in Alabama are lower than what he's used to.
"Coming out here, it's a lot more of a blessing to come out here and there's not as many people. I don't have a problem with the gas prices as far as that goes."
Buchanan may not be complaining, but others are. Still, they understand there's nothing they can do about the price hike.
"What changes can I do to make it not go up? I'm not in power to do something. Those that are in power, I leave them to make the prices go down," said Roosevelt Shepard.
According to Gas Buddy, the average cost for a gallon of gas in Huntsville is $2.62.That's better than the national average of $2.90
"We live in Mississippi, so we drive 5 hours there, you know maybe a month or two times a month. So in the long run it does end up hurting," Buchanan said.
Oil experts say gas prices could continue to increase since the U.S. Pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal.
OPEC isn't helping either. Its members are keeping oil production down through 2018.
"It's business I understand that, but the people kind of hurt as well," Buchanan said.
Drivers said this summer, it's all about budgeting.
"No matter what, I still have to go from point A to point B," Shepard said.
Industry insiders expect gas prices to go back down as we get closer to winter. That's because fewer drivers will be on the road.
Expect gas prices to average $2.90 a gallon from now through September. This is almost 20 cents higher than last year. This will mainly impact road travelers this summer.
