Former Huntsville teacher Harvey Knotts will be taken to Bermuda to face charges that he sexually abused a student at a school there while working as a teacher.

Federal court documents show Magistrate Judge Herman N. Johnson Jr. signed off on an extradition certification Dec. 7 that will send Knotts to Bermuda to face charges that he sexually abused a 17-year-old student at a school in Devonshire Parish, Bermuda, in 2007.

Knotts left the island for Nashville the evening he learned that the student reported the assault to school officials, authorities said.

Bermuda authorities said they didn't know where Knotts went after leaving the country until 2011, when several students at McDonnell Elementary School in Huntsville complained of abuse and the story was picked up by a Bermudan newspaper. Federal prosecutors said he did not tell anyone about his teaching job in Bermuda when he applied for the Huntsville job.

Knotts was charged with 10 counts of child sexual abuse in Huntsville, but a grand jury chose not to indict him in 2013. According to court documents, Bermudan authorities did not pursue an arrest warrant for Knotts after he was arrested and didn't know he wasn't indicted.

Bermudan authorities issued an arrest warrant for Knotts in 2016 as he returned to Mobile from a cruise. THey issued the warrant after U.S. Customs and Border Patrol tipped them off about his reentry into the country.
