Marshall County, Fayetteville City and Lincoln County schools announced they will be closing Thursday and Friday due to illness.

According to Superintendent Cindy Wigley with Marshall County Schools, 15 percent of students were out Wednesday, which is a 5 percent increase. Wigley said 843 students and 36 staff members were absent Wednesday. There are 5,672 students system-wide in 13 schools. Students are not allowed to return to school until they have been fever-free for 24 hours.

“We are doing all we can do, but when the flu virus is primarily spread by droplets in the air, it makes it difficult to prevent. We will be sanitizing the schools but the best way to prevent the epidemic from spreading is to limit exposure to others," Wigley said.

Marshall County Schools were closed on Monday and Tuesday due to the flu and weather. Wigley said they are cleaning the school on Thursday, but the main reason they are closing is to keep kids away from others that might be sick, because person to person contact is the primary way the flu is spread.

As of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Fayetteville City system, 400 of 1,400 students and more than 20 staff members were out sick.

The school system in Tennessee previously closed down Jan. 25 due to illness, including cases of the flu.

The FAST before- and after-school care program also will be closed.

Giles County Schools are closed the rest of the week because of widespread flu and strep.
