Maintaining healthcare funding and taxes were just two topics that U.S. Senate Candidate Doug Jones brought up Tuesday night at a town hall meeting in Huntsville.

His opponent, Roy Moore, was also invited to the event, but his campaign didn't respond to the invite.

Hundreds of people filled the pews at the First Missionary Baptist Church.

Jones's message centered around the people he is trying to gain votes from.

"Regardless of the zip code you live in, regardless of the color of your skin, regardless of who you, or where you are in your lot in life, our campaign is for you," said Jones.

Several people in the audience told WAAY 31 that message of inclusiveness is a major reason why they support Jones.

"Equality, whether it be race or gender; that he wants to make a common ground and be there for all people," said Cheri Kamel

"This is an opportunity for not just me as a 19-year-old, but for my kids later down the line; for them to have a system in place that promotes equality and justice," said Spencer Holden.

Jones also said, if elected, he would fight to maintain Medicaid and Medicare funding.

He also said he approves of tax reform, but not in the current form that it's in.

His main message to the people in the room was that he can help lead america past the divisive state that it's in now.

"We need a voice from the south to help start the healing across this country," said Jones.

Jones will face Moore in the December 12 U.S. Senate special election.
