Investigation underway after sailboat fire near Point Mallard Water Park in Decatur

UPDATE: (7:20 p.m.) The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) says its Marine Patrol is investigating the incident that happened Friday around 3:30 p.m. on Flint Creek.

ALEA says the mast of the sailboat made contact with power lines crossing Flint Creek, near Point Mallard. The 11-year-old boy, who is from Trussville and was one of the four passengers on the sailboat, was injured and taken to Huntsville Children's Hospital.

ALEA says the sailboat sustained fire damage, and Marine Patrol Troopers are investigating.

-----------

(5:40 p.m.) The Decatur Fire chief says the mast on the sailboat hit wires on an electrical tower in the middle of the Tennessee River, located directly behind the water park and just down from the beach.

Decatur Fire says four people were electrocuted, including an 11-year-old boy. All four people were taken to the hospital. Officials say the little boy sustained the worst injuries out of the four people, and he is in critical condition.

The chief says the call about the fire came in just before 3:30 p.m. on Friday, and the fire was internal and put out quickly. The boat was coming from Guntersville. It has been towed away from the scene.

The power lines belong to Decatur Utilities. They have been de-energized now, so if another boat were to come through and hit it, they would be okay.

-----------

According to Decatur Fire, one patient was taken to the hospital after a sailboat caught fire near the beach area at Point Mallard Water Park.
