Decatur City School teacher resigns amid sexual misconduct allegations

A former Decatur City High School teacher has resigned amid accusations of sexual conduct with students. Carrie Witt submitted her resignation during a special meeting for the Decatur City Board of Education. The Board originally scheduled a termination hearing for August 14th, but that meeting has been cancelled since Witt offered her resignation.

Witt had been on paid administrative leave for two years after she was accussed of having sex with two students between the ages of 16 and 19. During those two years Witt was paid a salary of $116,412. Morgan County Court Judge Glenn Thompson dismissed the charges against Witt calling the law on sex between a teacher and student unconstitutional. An appeal court recently reveresed the Thompson's ruling sending the case back to court.

Witt could face between two to 20 years in prison if found guilty. 

This is the statement emailed from the Decatur City School Board of Education:

"The Decatur City Board of Education is pleased to have been able to bring closure to personnel
proceedings involving Carrie Cabri Witt by securing Ms. Witt’s resignation. The Board’s
approval of Ms. Witt’s resignation does not in any way signify its acceptance of or agreement
with her denial of culpability. Carrie Witt was a former teacher at Decatur High School, who,
according to Court records, was arrested on March 21, 2016, for alleged violation of Code of
Alabama §13A-6-81, “School Employee engaging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19
years” which is a class B felony, carrying a range of punishment from two years to twenty years
in prison.

The termination hearing was delayed by order of The Circuit Court of Morgan County. Decatur
City Schools appealed this delay to the Supreme Court of Alabama. The Supreme Court
unanimously ruled in the Board’s favor, reversing the injunction. A termination hearing was
scheduled as soon as possible, for Tuesday, August 14, 2018. This resignation negates the
necessity of the termination hearing. Although legal complications beyond our control delayed
resolution of the case, the determination to pursue it to conclusion confirms the Board’s
unwavering commitment to ensuring that our faculty and staff adhere to the highest standards of
professionalism in their dealings with students."
