On Tuesday, Athens City Schools Superintendent Trey Holladay announced the new Athens High School will open its doors to students Wednesday, January 23 to start the new semester.

The building of the new school is completed aside from its auditorium, which is expected to be ready in March. As of now, a grand opening is planned for March 31 when the auditorium should be finished.

The current semester ends this Friday, and Athens City Schools are off Monday, January 21 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Superintendent Holladay said there will be a teacher work day on Tuesday to get the new classrooms prepared. An orientation will be held that evening from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. to get families acquainted to the new facility.

Holladay said the opening has been a long-time coming and he is excited for students. The $57 million project was originally expected to be ready for students in November 2018. The weather had a major impact in construction of the school, along with roadwork and sidewalk development.
