All four lanes of traffic on Cecil Ashburn Drive in Huntsville opened on Thursday.
The City of Huntsville says work on the $18.1 million project is complete and crews are removing equipment and traffic control barricades.
Construction began on the road, which was previously only two lanes, in January of 2019.
“The 4-lane roadway came in under budget and four months ahead of schedule,” the city said in a news release Thursday morning.
It said the road’s extra capacity will allow it to accommodate more than 34,000 daily commuters. Eight-foot-wide shoulders were added for cyclists and pedestrians.
