The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting death of two north Florida deputies this Thursday afternoon. Authorities say the deputies were in a restaurant in Trenton, about 35 miles west of Gainesville, when someone shot them through the window.
Gilchrist County Sheriff Bobby Shultz identified the deputies as 30-year old Sargeant Noel Ramirez - and 25-year old Deputy Taylor Lindsay.
Fellow deputies responding to the scene found the shooter dead outside the business.
During an emotional news conference Thursday evening, Sheriff Shultz said the deputies were, "Men of integrity and loyalty" and added, "We're very proud of them."
Authorities say there is no apparent motive for the shooting. But during the news conference Sheriff Shultz said, "What do you expect when you demonize law enforcement?" When asked what he could tell reporters about the shooter, his answer was curt. "Nothing. The world's full of cowards and heroes. We need to focus on the heroes."
President trump tweeted his condolences to the families, friends and colleagues off the murdered deputies - calling them heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty.
