A math teacher at Boaz Middle School was arrested for having sexual contact with a student.

According to Deputy Chief Josh Gaskin with the Boaz Police Police Department, 29-year-old William Justin Beam turned himself into the Boaz Police Department around 9:00 a.m. Friday morning. A Marshall County Grand Jury indicted Beam on charges of school employee having sexual contact with a student under 19 years of age and sexual abuse 2nd degree.

Beam was then transferred to the Marshall County Jail on $20,000 bond. Gaskin said the investigation began on March 9 when the Superintendent of Boaz City Schools reported allegations of inappropriate conduct involving Beam and a student.

The Boaz Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff's Office, Marshall County Department of Human Resources and the Child Advocacy Center of Marshall County conducted the investigation and turned their findings over to the Marshall County District Attorney's Office who sent the case to a grand jury.

According to the Boaz City Schools website, Beam taught 7th grade math and coached the 7th and 8th grade boys' basketball teams at Boaz Middle School.

On Tuesday, the Boaz Board of Education provided the following statement: "In response to reports that a Boaz City Schools’ employee has been indicted, Boaz School Superintendent Shannon Stanley confirmed that Justin Beam has been on leave from his job with the school system since March 9, 2018. Dr. Stanley stated that the school system has cooperated with law enforcement and other governmental agencies in their investigations of the employee’s alleged misconduct and that it will continue to do so. She reported that she is in the process of gathering information regarding the indictment and that she will make any recommendation for personnel action that she decides is appropriate under the cirumstances without undue delay."
