With the highly traveled Cecil Ashburn Drive set to be shut down for 12-14 months next year, some local businesses are already voicing concerns.

A manager at Mellow Mushroom told WAAY 31 they get a lot of regulars coming from the other side of the mountain and they're worried because shutting down the road will shut off access to a lot of their customers in Hampton Cove.

"A lot of our guests travel over the mountain either on their way to work stopping in or on their way home from work stopping in."

Ben Patterson is a manager at Mellow Mushroom off Cecil Ashburn Drive and told me just the talk of closing down the the major roadway is causing concern for some customers. Now that it's a reality he says the inconvenience could be a big blow.

"Yeah, we've had several of our regulars voicing opinions about closing the mountain down. There's not gonna be an easy way for them to get here, it's not gonna be convenient anymore so I have a feeling it's gonna hurt our business."

Leah McCain is the owner of Valley Chic next door and could also see the effects...

"Well, we do have a lot of customers that come from that side of town so I do think it could have an impact on our business."

McCain thinks the end result will outweigh the 12 to 14 months that could hurt business, as she herself has had frustrations when driving on the road.

"I do agree with them that it is needed. When I've driven the road myself I know traffic backs up there."

All these businesses can do is hope to make it through the year long closure and traffic picks up again.

"I think the important thing right now is for everyone to remain positive right now about because there's not a lot we can do about it. I think in the long run it will be pay off that it's going to be 4 lanes."

For Patterson he hopes families will use alternate routes to the Mellow Mushroom

"A lot of families, a lot of kids really love mellow mushroom. We have birthday parties it seems like every other night, families coming in and meeting people from there who live on this side of the mountain."

While these businesses aren't surprised by the announcement today, they do hope the city sticks to the timeline of 12-14 months so that their businesses can get back to serving both sides of the mountain.
