HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Thompson set a Class 6A state record with 231.5 points to claim its second straight state championship, Scottsboro scored 159 points to win its sixth Class 5A title, and Susan Moore won the closest competition of the 2012 AHSAA State Tournament with 91 points to claim its first-ever Class 1A-4A crown Saturday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.
Coach Andrew Holland’s Bulldogs edged out Oak Grove for the small-school title. The Tigers managed 86.5 points to take second place ahead of 2011 state champion St. Clair County, which finished with 86.
Southside-Gadsden finished second to Scottsboro with 131 points and Arab was third with 107.
Grissom finished second to Thompson with 142 points, an 89-point winning margin for Coach Shawn Weltzin’s Warriors.
Brandon Womack of Scottsboro earned MVP honors for Coach Daryle Qualls’ Wildcats as he closed out his sophomore year with a state-record 86 wins, which also ranks second nationally according to the NFHS Record Book. He finished 86-2 on the year with 64 pins that set a single-season national mark for falls.
Senior Dillan Campbell of Oak Grove won MVP honors in the 1A-4A division as the 220-pound division state champ for the third straight year. He finished 70-0 this season and 308-38 for his career.
Class 6A MVP Brian White of Opelika captured the 113-pound state title to earn MVP honors. The senior finished a perfect 40-0.
Piedmont’s Clay Dent (77-0), the 1A-4A 182-pound weight division champion, set a state record for most wins in an undefeated season.
