Huntsville, AL - Representative Laura Hall and the Black Alliance for Educational Options hosted a town hall meeting at the Showers Center in North Huntsville. Organizers say the purpose of tonight's event was education. "We really feel like it's important that organizations take information to the people, so that people can understand it and get their arms around it and determine how they want to proceed," says Kenneth Campbell, president of the BAEO.
A charter school receives state funding, but is run by a specific group. Alabama is one of only ten states in the nation that do not allow charter schools. "Since so many other states have already done it, we could really do it the right way," says State Rep. Laura Hall. "We can look at what the other states have done and those mistakes they have made and hopefully be able to correct them and improve it."
Campbell agrees. He says, in Alabama, we need to do whatever we can to improve education. "With the performance we've had, I don't know that we can take anything off the table. The fact of the matter is charter school have worked incredibly well in some places."
That is what Representative Laura Hall hopes accomplish by bringing the message to the people. "The main focus is dealing with parental involvement, giving parents the information so they can determine what they see schools and educational activities that meet the educational needs of their children," she says.
