By now I guess ya’ll have seen that YouTube video where a father shoots his daughter’s laptop because of something the posted on Facebook. It’s been seen by more than 30 million people so far. (
If you're not one of those 30 million - here's the link.)
A lot of people think dad did the right thing, others believe he stepped over the line. And a whole lot of people believe it’s a hoax.
Well it isn’t a hoax. The man’s name is Tommy Jordan of Albamarle, North Carolina.
Sitting in front of a home video camera, Jordan goes on to explain he looked at his daughter’s Facebook page and found an angry post she tried to hide, blasting her parents, and filled with profanity.
He placed her laptop in the yard and emptied his .45, putting 9 hollow-point bullets into, or through the case.
I wanted to learn a little more about this dad. So I found his Facebook page and a photo of his grounded daughter Hannah. Who also has a gun. On his page, Tommy Jordan answered some of the questions people are asking, such as "what was Hannah’s reaction to the video?"
“She was mad, but in the end she got over it pretty quickly. She was embarrassed that people heard her using foul language."
He says Child Protective custody visited their home, and left satisfied everyone in the house is healthy and happy. He encourages EVERY parent to make it a goal to know more about the technology their kids use, and learn about ways to monitor their children on social media networks,
He says its a parent’s job to protect and love their children. If you watched the video, you saw Jordan mention he works in IT. He knows a thing or two about social networking, and computers in general. To him, the idea that teenagers have a right to privacy online... he says that’s a joke.
Tommy Jordan has not spoken to a television station reporter, but he’s been invited to be a guest on the Dr. Phil Show. according to Google's advertising policy, Jordan has earned nearly $50,000 from the video.
So what do ya’ll think? Does she have the right to her online privacy or did dad do the right thing? Did his reaction go a bit too far? If you haven’t been grounded and still have your laptop, let me know what you think.
Take off the safety and fire away at Jamey on Twitter.
