Boaz, AL-Administrators at one local Marshall County community college are very excited about this school year. Snead State Community College has accomplished something it's never done before. This fall, its seen its biggest freshman class ever.
A little over one thousand new freshmen students are enrolled at the school.
Larry Miller says one reason enrollment is up is because many more students are choosing to attend 2 year schools instead of four year universities. Miller is the Chief Academic Officer at Snead State. "I think the best way to look at our tuition value is we are about a third of what it cost to go to a university and the ability to offer a high quality education at that level of pricing is really helped us grow in the past several years" Miller said.
After receiving their two year degrees, most students who attend Snead will move on to larger universities. Freshmen Brett George and Taylor Fossett say Snead State was the perfect way to begin their college academic experience. Fossett plans to attend The University of Alabama and study speech therapy when she graduates from Snead. "I love it here and everybody is so friendly" Fossett said. "When I came here I felt like I didn't know any stranger. The teachers are so amazing, if you need help they are always there".
Freshmen Brett George will attend UAB in Birmingham when he finishes Snead State. George says he is glad he chose a good smaller school to begin his academic journey. "The teachers are great and always help you with your work. So to me its better to go here than a massive university and not knowing anything".
Administrator Larry Miller says he hopes more and more students will continue to enroll. He says affordable tuition makes the school very attractive to
many new students and their families. Tuition at Snead State is 138 dollars per credit hour. Most students will take a 15 hour class load.
