Huntsville, AL - Madison County Water customers can expect higher rates when their June 2011 bill arrives.

Monday morning, the Madison County Commission unanimously gave the thumbs up to the first rate increase in 13 years.

The move comes as Madison County Water struggles to get out of the red. With increasing costs and less money coming in, the move was absolutely necessary, officials say.

Still, for most of the utility's 28,000 customers, the increase will be less than $10 per month. "The only major change in the rate system is we're going to charge two dollars and fifty cents per 1000 gallons for the first twenty five hundred gallons of water" Water Company Director Fritz Mucke told WAAY 31.

The average customer will see an increase around $6.25 per bill.
