The American Cancer Society is sponsoring a program called "Look Good, Feel Better". Local cosmetologists, skin care and make up specialists come together to help women undergoing cancer treatments look and feel their best.
Barbara Mabry has breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemo and radiation treatments, but on Monday, she and other cancer patients and volunteers are spending their afternoon a different way.
"I'm going to look like a movie star when I leave here," said Mabry.
The free program teaches the ladies hands on techniques to help restore their appearance and self-image during their battle with cancer.
"It's important to women who are undergoing treatment because it helps boost their self esteem," said Diane Peeples with the American Cancer Society. "It can be devastating to lose your hair. It can be devastating to have skin changes, and this program addresses those things."
The ladies gather with women who are going through similar things like hair loss and changes in skin their skin and color. During the program they are taught how to do their make up, are given tips on fixing wigs and hats and given techniques in drawing eyebrows.
"I think the more you do to make your life as normal as possible and to keep having positive experiences, keeps you from getting depressed. You just feel happier," said Mabry.
The program is held the first Monday of every month at ECM East in Florence in the Community Learning Center. It is also held at the Helen Keller Wellcare Center in Sheffield on the third Monday of every month.
"Look Good, Feel Better" is a partnership of the American Cancer Society, National Cosmetology Association Foundation, Professional Beauty Association and Personal Care Products Council Foundation.
