Fort Payne-Being a corrections officer is a dangerous job. Training is underway in Dekalb County this week designed to help keep officers safe.

The Dekalb County detention center is hosting a jail management school. Its a two week class where officers get training in jail security, supervision of inmates,
handcuffing techniques and escape awareness. The training is helping to prepare corrections officers for possible life and death situations on their jobs.

Sierra Wilks is a new employee at the Dekalb Detention center and is hoping to learn as much as possible to help keep her safe on the job. "Officer safety is the most important thing working in the jail how to control inmates and control inmates so officers don't get hurt and also so that inmates don't hurt each other" Wilks said.

17 officers are taking the class. Eight are from Dekalb County and the rest are from detention centers in Anniston, Troy and Fort Payne.
