Huntsville, AL-Each year teachers typically have to shell out hundreds of dollars of their own money to stock up on school supplies. But one Huntsville
organization is now helping out.
Thursday morning Nancy Jones met with groups from the community who are donating school supplies to her organization known as Free 2 Teach". The volunteer group wants to use the west Elementary School in Huntsville that's been closed for two years as the location to hand out free school supplies to teachers. Jones is the co-chair
for Free 2 Teach. She says this is great news for teachers and students. "It's a win win for the community, its showing the community we are re-purposing a building thats not being used at the time Its helping our kids get the supplies they need and making our teachers appreciated" Jones said.
Once a month teachers from Huntsville, Madison and Madison County School systems will be able to pick up items like: pens, pencils, glue, markers and paper. The project is expected to begin next January after being approved by the Huntsville City Schools Superintendent.
Amy Thaxton has been teaching 10th grade English at Bob Jones High school in Madison for 8 years. She like many other teachers in Alabama spend 500 to a thousand dollars of their own money every year to purchase supplies for their classrooms. Thaxton says she can't wait to begin picking up free school supplies. "This is such a great thing that will benefit all teachers which will ultimately benefit our students" Thaxton said.
