Huntsville, AL - Leslie Ann Hudgens is a surgical scrub nurse at
Dunagan, Yates and Alison Plastic Surgery center. She helps counsel patients before breast augmentation surgery.
“The main thing is that patients are educated…and they know the difference between a board certified plastic surgeon, and who is not," Hudgens said.
What makes Hudgens unique is that she too has implants. Six years ago, she chose breast augmentation surgery after having two children.
“By having the actual surgery yourself, you’re able to actually talk to the patient and reassure them that they are normal," said Hudgens.
Now
The Food and Drug Administration is altering warning labels on silicone breast implants.
The main point the FDA wants to stress is that breast implants are
not guaranteed to last for life. They recommend additional surgery within eight to 10 years.
Certified plastic surgeon,
Dr. Deason Dunagan, is not alarmed by this new warning.
“To just say it needs to be removed or replaced at 8 years or 10 years, is not necessarily true. We have to use out clinical judgment, and our good patient care to determine this,” Dunagan said.
He also stressed that all implants do wear out over time.
“There are many, many forms of implants. And almost all those implants, including breast implants, do wear out over time," said Dunagan.
Dunagan said he performs 50 to 100 breast augmentation surgeries every year.
Dunagan and Hudgens go over check-list with patients prior to surgery.
Companies also provide 10-year warrantees that patients can purchase prior to surgery. If the implant should deflate or rupture it can be replaced.
