One Army veteran has gone from involvement with the "multiple launch rocket system".... to launching a new business. And, it's a business that's all about peace and serenity.
"I did 11 years in the US Army. I was field artillery, I shot rockets MLRS", said Joseph Martin of Smiling Otis Studios.
Not exactly the background I expected when I traveled out to Hartselle to meet Joseph Martin of Smiling Otis Studios. He doesn't shoot rockets anymore, now he makes bombs....... bath bombs or fizzes. Candles, bath teas and hand made soap.
"We started with candles and expanded to soaps and bath teas. It's turned into a big thing, and I never expected it."
That's because it started with some small things. Empty baby food jars he and his wife were trying to find a use for after baby had gobbled up the food.
He does each candle by hand, one at a time. You can find Joseph's work, Smiling Otis Studios, on a website called
ETSY.com. It's kind of like an on line craft fair, that's gone world wide via the web.
" All my friends say, you went from shooting an M16 to making soaps and shower fizzes and there really not sure about all this."
