The Florence City Council will decide at their Tuesday night meeting about a walkway addition to the downtown area.

The council will vote on whether they should provide $66,319 from an economic development fund to help construct and elevated pedestrian walkway connecting the old Rogers building and the parking deck.  The walkway would be constructed from the 2nd or 3rd level of the parking deck.

The building was recently purchased by Gordon Street Corp. and houses corporate offices as well as Joseph A. Bank department store.

The walkway would allow pedestrians to enter the business or have access to Mobile Street.  City leaders said that they believe it would encourage more people to use the parking deck.

"Parking is sometimes a problem when you have employees that take up public parking spaces along the street," said city spokesman Phil Stevenson.  "This would just help relieve that portion of the problem."

If approved, construction could possible begin in the summer.
