OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. – “I've made a lot of interesting things,” Stephanie Fowler said. “A lot of things I make is very geek or nerd oriented.”
Fowler and her sister, Kitti Durkac each have the ambition of turning their hobby side jobs into full time gigs.
“Yes,” Durkac said. “I would love to have my own brand of jewelry.”
The sisters make bottle cap earrings, necklaces, rings and among other things with household items.
“One of the fun things about bottle caps, everyone can relate to them in some way,” Fowler explained.
“It's a way of turning your trash into something you wear or make art out of,” Durkac said. “I use a lot of [Pabst Blues Ribbon] caps, because that’s what we drink a lot of is PBR. That’s mainly what my bottle caps consist of. But people give us stuff all the time.”
Fowler also sells and makes recycled t-shirt totes.
Both ladies sell their stuff on-line and on separate websites.
So are these sisters competing for the same customers?
“No, we're inspiration for each other if anything else,” Fowler said.
“She does necklaces, I do earrings,” Durkac added. “We kind of accessorize each others products.”
