HOLLYWOOD Ala (WAAY)-  Following a 6 month investigation, a dog fighting ring in Jackson County was broken up by police Friday night.

Richard Humphrey was arrested and is now facing a Class C felony charge after authorities say 10 pit bulls were found chained up to trees, some badly injured.

Police say the pit bulls were being forced to fight each other while the owners bet on the winners.

Hollywood Police Chief Jason Hepler said more individuals were involved and more arrests will likely be made.

"If you look at the dogs and the suffering they've endured, this isn't a victimless crime. This is something that really needs to be thought about by our senate and bump it up to a Class B felony where maybe it will deter more people," Hepler said.

The dogs are currently being treated at the Scottsboro Animal Shelter.
