ATHENS, Ala. (WAAY) - UPDATE: The 2 kittens rescued from the home, Melvin & Mia have been adopted by one of the rescue workers at the Athens - Limestone Animal Shelter.
Thursday Athens Police arrested 48 year old Ronald Golden and charged him with 22 counts of animal cruelty.
Police were tipped off by neighbors. After they questioned Golden he admitted to buying kittens off of Craigslist, naming them, and then killing them at his home in Athens.
Golden also told police he had a "cat room" where he would torture and kill the animals. Golden told officials he was "angry at the world". Police found five dead kittens when they searched his home.
Officials said they also found blood spatter inside the home on the walls and floor. He would break their necks, throw them against walls, and stomp on the kittens to kill them, according to Athens Police.
Neighbors of Golden's were shocked at the allegations. John Merriman a neighbor said, "I get infuriated that someone would do that and very scared. You read about serial killers and such they often have history of abusing animals before they move on to even worse things, very relived he was caught."
Due to the cruel nature of the crime a mental health officer was brought in to evaluate Golden. Each charge of cruelty comes with a year and a day to ten day sentence.
Following Golden's arrest he was taken to Limestone County Jail. His bond has been set at $22,000.
