COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WAAY) - Animal control board members suspended an officer Thursday who they said euthanized a dog that he had picked up the day before.

Animal Control officer Terry Berry was suspended for three days without pay, Sheffield Mayor Ian Sanford told the TimesDaily.

The dog, a pit bull named Roscoe, was taken to the animal shelter in July after Berry received a call that the dog had been hanging around someone's property and not getting along with the property owners dogs.

State law requires animal shelters to hold an animal seven days before they can be euthanized.

Since the incident, the board has approved new procedures in an effort to prevent similar accidents.
