LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WAAY)- Two malnourished horses found Tuesday on Ham Road are now in the care of the Limestone County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Mike Blakely says there was also a horse dead from starvation in the same pasture.

Emma Hardiman tipped off the sheriff's office after finding the dead animal. Hardiman owns the land but has leased the 4 acres to a Huntsville man for the last 3 years. Hardiman says the owner when missing for almost two months so she fed the animals what she could during that time.

"I did try to call them when they done with out so long that they would be hungry, begging for food. I would try to call them but couldn't ever get anybody" says Hardiman.

Sheriff Blakely says the man who leased the property is out of town but says he may have sold the horses to someone else. Blakely says charges are pending until the owner is located.

According to Hardiman, this was the second horse to die on the leased land. "They knew better. If they have horses, they know they need to be taken care of and anybody that won't take care of animals doesn't need them."
