Huntsville, AL- Pseudoephedrine, used to treat the most stubborn sinus congestion is also used to make meth. "It’s basically killing kids, it is disrupting lives, families…splitting up families, it's a definite problem," says business owner Chad Nelson. The drug is the main ingredient in drugs like Sudafed, but also in Methamphetamine. Currently, medication containing pseudoephedrine can be bought over the counter. Customers must sign for it and it can only be purchased in limited amounts per year; however, change may be on the way. Soon your sinus congestion could requires a trip to the doctor and not just your local pharmacy If house bill 88 passes the drug will be available by prescription only. Rainsville Police Chief Charles Centers thinks it is a good idea. "There is always negative and positive when you look at something like this but for law enforcement it is going to help us. I think it is a good thing." Good for law enforcement but not for people who don't have insurance. “I think it would hurt a lot of people that are without health insurance at this time, to be able to self medicate themselves when they are sick," said uninsured Renai Davidson. But Nelson says he still thinks the bill would be beneficial. "This will put an end to the distribution and processing of that drug. It definitely is an issue that needs to be addressed," he said. If the house passes the bill it will still need Senate approval. Davidson says even if the bill passes, she doesn't think this will completely solve the meth problem. "I think it's a bigger issue than just being able to buy the Sudafed over the counter, I think it's a lot bigger issue than that and I don't think its fair for the rest of us to not be able to use it for what the product was intended to be used for.
